In-flight testing
Mark will perform daily exercise sessions on board the ISS as follows:
Days 4, 6 and 8:
- 10 minutes rest with controlled breathing (heart rate measured continuously on halter ECG, blood pressure measured at minute 2 and minute 9. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) measured at minute 2 and minute 9)
- 15 minute bicycle ergometer test (4 exercise sessions 100W, 125W, 150W, 175W - each 2 minutes separated by 1 minute rest. Heart rate measured continuously. Blood pressure measured immediately after test. RPE measured at minute 2, minute 5, minute 8, minute 11)
- 10 minutes rest with controlled breathing (heart rate measured continuously, blood pressure measured immediately and at minute 9. RPE measured immediately and minute 9)
- Thigh girth
Days 5 and 7:
- 20 minutes bicycle exercise separated into two 10 minute sessions by 3 minutes rest when blood pressure and RPE will be measured. (heart rate measured continuously, blood pressure measured in between each set and after the second set. RPE measured at the same time as blood pressure.)
- 20 minutes resistance exercise using resistive bands. Two 10 minute sessions separated by 3 minutes (heart rate measured continuously, blood pressure between 2 sets and at the end of the second session. RPE measured at the same time as blood pressure.)
- The exercises that will make use of these bands will be as follows:
- Semi squats 10 minutes (30 repetitions, 30 seconds rest)
- Back extension 10 minutes (30 repetitions, 30 seconds rest)
- Thigh girth
Blood pressure readings, mid thigh girth measurements and ratings of perceived exertion will be recorded into a log book daily.
Post-flight testing
On landing, Mark will be assessed by a medical doctor. Provided that his physical condition is diagnosed as being satisfactory, Mark will return to Star City within 12 hours. At this time, Mark will perform the following physiological tests:
Day 1: hamstring flexibility, mid-thigh girth, body weight, orthostatic test, cycle ergometer test, recovery test
Day 2: hamstring flexibility, mid-thigh girth, body weight, orthostatic test
Day 3: hamstring flexibility, mid-thigh girth, body weight, orthostatic test, cycle ergometer test, recovery test, isokinetic muscle strength test
Day 4: hamstring flexibility, mid-thigh girth, body weight, orthostatic test
Day 5: hamstring flexibility, mid-thigh girth, body weight, orthostatic test, cycle ergometer test, recovery test
