BODY COMPOSITION
Body composition refers to the relative percentages of body weight comprised of fat and fat-free body tissue. Body fat percentage refers to the percentage of your body weight that is fat tissue. Your genetic make-up and lifestyle behavior largely determine your body fat and body composition. Excess body fat has been associated with many chronic diseases. A low body fat percentage, however, is also not necessarily healthy and may have implications for normal body functioning, specifically for women.
It is important to remember that the methods that are used to assess body fat are not 100% accurate as the calculations that are used based on a large number of assumptions. This measurement is therefore used more as a screening tool to identify body composition as a possible risk factor for cardiac related disease.
